A violência entra-nos pelas casas, através dos media, das redes sociais, das histórias dos conflitos que se agudizaram nos últimos anos. Esta convoca uma resposta visceral que, por vezes, anula possibilidades de a travar e pensar sobre o que estamos a viver quando vivemos uma situação limite. Violências mais estrondosas, como as da guerra que recentemente voltou a entrar no território europeu, mas que sempre habitou outros territórios, ou mais quotidianas, como a violência racial, religiosa, a que ocorre na intimidade, mas também a de políticas securitárias e as que temos lentamente exercido sobre o planeta. Como pensar a violência e, também, o direito a dela se defender? Tendo como ponto de partida estas questões, convidamos a filósofa Elsa Dorlin, autora de Se défendre: une philosophie de la violence, Prémio Frantz Fanon 2018 (Associação de Filosofia das Caraíbas) e Prix de l'Ecrit Social 2019, um livro onde, da resistência das pessoas escravizadas, às artes marciais praticadas pelos sufragistas, da insurreição do ghetto de Varsóvia aos Black Panthers, a questão do exercício à violência como direito a se defender é central.

Violence enters our homes, through the media, social networks, the stories of conflicts that have escalated in recent years. This calls for a visceral response that sometimes cancels out possibilities to stop it and how to think about what we are experiencing. More resounding violence, such as the war that recently re-entered European territory, but which has always inhabited other territories, or more day to day violence, like racial or religious which occurs in intimacy, but also that of security policies and those that we have been slowly exerting on the planet. How do we think about violence and also the right to defend oneself against it? We invite the philosopher Elsa Dorlin, author of Se défendre: une philosophie de la violence – Frantz Fanon Prize 2018 and Prix de l'Ecrit Social 2019 – a book where the question of exercising violence as a right to defence is central. From the resistance of enslaved people, to the martial arts practised by suffragettes, from the insurrection of the Warsaw ghetto to the Black Panthers.
