Important Safety Information

Farmhouse Creek Track is one of Australia's most challenging back country bush walking tracks/routes, due to its remote location and terrain. There are many steep cliff sections up to 85 degrees where rock scrambling and pack hauling is required. There have been fatalities due to falls on the ascent of Federation Peak.

This is a serious and difficult multi-day, T5 level, wilderness track. Navigation skills using map and compass are required as the track may not be clearly marked in many places. Phones are not to be relied upon.

Only VERY experienced walkers should attempt this track.

The weather in Tasmania’s remote National Parks can be notoriously unpredictable and at times, dangerous. Ensure that you understand the weather forecast for the duration of your walk (Strathgordon and Geeveston are suggested towns to check the forecast; depending on weather patterns at the time) and observe sunrise and sunset times.

Individuals are responsible for their own safety. You must ensure that you are experienced in remote bush walking, have a high level of fitness and are capable of undertaking such a walk. You need to be self-sufficient and ensure that you are carrying the clothing and equipment needed to protect you from exposure to cold, wet, wind and heat and that you are carrying enough food. For information about what to take go to -What to Pack.

Please read our Safety in Parks information and check for Alerts in the area before you go. In Tasmania, Search and Rescue operations are managed by Tasmania Police – phone 000. Noting that there may not be cellular service in this area.

Camping

There are no hut facilities anywhere along the Farmhouse Creek Track. As the Eastern Arthur Range Traverse is reopening from the 1st October, the PWS requests that those walking Farmhouse Creek Track camp at Cutting Camp where possible, to avoid overcrowding at Bechervaise Plateau and Hanging Lake campsites. Refer to the Leave No Trace principles for toileting practices.

All walkers must carry quality tents (3-4 season rating with inner and outer layer) with enough capacity to sleep all members of your group. Other than for solo walkers, single person tents are discouraged due to limited campsite capacity.

Leave No Trace

Please respect the natural and cultural values that make this Track part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area: Leave No Trace | Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania.

Parks Pass

A valid national parks pass is required. This can be purchased in advance online: Welcome to Parks Passes.

Access

A washout has caused significant damage to West Picton Rd which is the access road to the Farmhouse Creek walking Track. The road is closed to vehicles from the sight of the hazard. The hazardous area is 3.2 kms from the Farmhouse Creek walking track trail head. This means walkers must park at a small turning area just before the hazardous area and walk the extra 3.2 kms to access the trail head. (This area will fit a maximum of 4 vehicles).

All walkers proceeding to the Farmhouse Creek should take this into consideration when preparing for your trip and use extra caution in the area. Check our alerts page: Alerts | Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania.
