Why I Buy Clothes That Don’t Exist: Is Digital Fashion Worth It?

I walked into the magic closet and looked around in awe. I had always wanted to be someone that could afford extravagant clothes, but it seemed like they were out of my reach. Suddenly, a beautiful lady appears before me, wearing a heavenly red dress. She smiles at me and says, “Welcome to your new life!”

No, I wasn’t dreaming, but that is how I felt when I discovered DressX, one of the first digital-only fashion marketplaces.

If you’re wondering if it’s worth buying clothes that don’t exist, the following reasons to buy digital clothing might give you an answer.

Digital fashion doesn’t constrain you.

When I first went into the DressX site, I was amazed by all the shiny things I saw. I started to think about how I would look wearing those items and get excited about all the possibilities. I thought this was a perfect opportunity to “wear” eccentric garments that otherwise I would not afford or have the occasion to showcase.

I started thinking that this would be a chance to let my imagination fly and not be constrained by what is practical, comfortable, and adequate to the climate. I could just try anything! And that felt so liberating. Feeling that you can defy the laws of physics can be strangely gratifying.

Meanwhile, browsing all the unconventional outfits, I had another thought, I wouldn’t even have to worry about finding my perfect size because the items would be fitted to match my body shape precisely. It was the first time I went shopping without worrying if something would fit, and that’s amazing!

Now, take a look at the dress in my picture. It looks dreamy. But, would I buy it to wear it in real life? And if so, would I wear it more than once? Probably not, because it’s not practical, and it would have lost its novelty after the first wear—both for the people who saw me on it and for me.

But with digital fashion, all of that doesn’t matter. I could “wear” it once without the same impact on my finances and the planet. So I thought, “why not?” There’s no harm—or not nearly as much as if I had acquired the physical version of it.

Furthermore, I don’t even have to limit myself to wear it just once. That’s where NFTs (non-fungible tokens) come into the picture. If you shop an NFT of a virtual garment, you become the owner and can wear it in your photos, videogames, and VR. Then, you could even sell it once you don’t want it anymore. NFTs make the trading of virtual goods feel like it’s real life.

Digital fashion designers need support.

All virtual clothing companies have a point: Not all of our clothes need to exist physically. We live in virtual worlds more than ever before, and you don’t need to be a geek for that – think Instagram, Facebook, Zoom. At this point in human history, most people have a digital persona, and that digital persona doesn’t need physical clothes.

But bringing a digital fashion business to life must be pretty challenging, considering that only a minuscule percentage of the population understands the concept of virtual garments and their benefits. The rest of the world has no clue what the point of digital fashion is or how it works.

Therefore, I aim to encourage the forward-thinking businesses and artists working on digital fashion by saying, “I see your point, and I want to make a change, too.” We need to support the change drivers to keep the technology advancing and make a dent against physical fashion over-consumption.

Other people need to know that digital fashion exists.

I know that these things exist because I’m in the medium. I love technology and fashion. That’s why I created this blog. So I’m constantly looking for innovation and trying things out.

But I know that most people have no idea that digital fashion even exists. If you’re not a gamer, it’s doubtful that you have encountered the concept before. Hence, I want to do my bit and tell people that different ways of consuming fashion and expressing yourself.

Digital fashion is the future.

I genuinely believe that the concept of having an alternative life in the metaverse will be a reality. It cannot be any other way. We are already living in a version of an alternative reality thanks to social media, gaming, and VR.

So, as technology advances, all of those experiences will become more immersive, and everyone will understand the concept of skins or clothing applied to themselves or their avatar. Everything points in that direction, so I believe it’s time for us to embrace ideas like virtual clothing.

Also, to curve the climate change imminent consequences, we need to act fast and think radically. We need to embrace new concepts and new realities. We don’t need yet another physical outfit for our Instagram feed. We need to think long-term and see ahead of the game.

The boom of blockchain technology and NFTs will only make digital fashion more viable for anyone because we can own and trade our virtual garments just like we would do with physical clothes.

Final thoughts

Digital fashion has several benefits that make it an environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional fast-fashion model. For one thing, you don’t need as many physical clothes when everything happens virtually! That saves tons of resources in production and shipping, not to mention the immense waste from product returns because something didn’t fit.

In addition, NFTs are total game-changers in digital goods. They are especially relevant for digital fashion because they allow both ends of the supply chain—designers who create clothing digitally and consumers—to have more control over their digital garments.
