It's the Christmas Bird Count!
Started in 1900, the Christmas Bird Count is North America’s longest-running Citizen Science project. All day, on wintery days between December 14 and January 5, volunteers set out to count birds within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. We report on the birds we observe through a standardized process that allows researchers across the country to use the data generated and to better understand our feathered neighbours and their winter-time behaviours!
I'm piloting a circle for this years Christmas Bird Count in the Prospect area, which isn't currently covered by the Halifax, Bedford, or Blanchford circles, and I'm looking for helpers!
If you haven't participated in the Christmas Bird Count before, it's really fun! It basically a day of bird watching, either along pre-designated walk routes or at home by your feeder, with a central coordinator collecting everybody's sightings at the end of the day so they can be compiled into a report for Birds Canada. As a participant, you would be given a location or route of your choosing (your home if you choose), a data sheet, and asked to look for birds for maybe an hour, two, or more depending on the location. I and other volunteers would be on hand virtually to help with IDs, and at the end of the day I would ask you for your tally, via email, messenger, or however works best for you. I also have field guides and binoculars available.
Routes/feeders could be anywhere from Tantallon to Goodwood to Sambro. If you're located in these areas and would be interested in joining this experimental circle (or if you're new to the area and would like to be assigned a route), let me know by emailing [email protected]
Open to everybody! Experienced birders definitely welcome as route leads but newbies are welcome too!
